Rooted in Hope

Thirty-six years ago, if you'd told the two of us, sitting across from a counselor who was telling us to get a divorce, that we'd still be married today, we wouldn't have believed you. We couldn't have. All we could see in that moment was how badly we were failing at something we didn't yet know how to do.

That's the thing about hope. It's rarely visible from inside the hard season. It only makes sense looking back.

Wherever You Are, There's Room for a New Day

Here's what I want you to know as we close out this series: it doesn't matter where you are in your relationship right now, or what's already happened. There is always room for a new day. Room to learn something you didn't know before. Room to understand each other a little better than you did last year. Room to celebrate what's good, and room to keep supporting each other through whatever season comes next.

That's true whether you're in a marriage, or whether the relationship that matters most to you right now looks different than that. Wherever you've walked with us through this series, if any part of it has been helpful to you and the people you love, that was always the hope behind writing it.

What's Actually Changed Us

If you've read the last three weeks, you know our story hasn't been a straight line. Grace we didn't always deserve. Truth we didn't always want to hear. Rhythms we had to fight to protect through moves, job changes, health struggles, and everything in between.

But if I had to name the one thing that's kept us growing instead of just surviving, it's this: we've gotten better, over time, at identifying what we each actually need, and choosing to support that need honestly, instead of guessing or assuming.

For years, we didn't have language for this. We just knew when something felt off, or when one of us pulled away, without always understanding why. Learning to name our own needs, and to really hear each other's, changed the way we show up for one another.

Tonya

Am I wanted?

Ryan

Am I safe?

For me, that question has always been Am I wanted? For Ryan, it's Am I safe? Two good, well-meaning people, asking completely different questions underneath the surface, which meant we could both be trying our hardest and still missing what the other one actually needed.

Discover Your Primal Question

If you haven't already, this is exactly what the Primal Question assessment is built to help you do. It's a simple tool for identifying the core need driving so much of how you think, feel, and act, in your relationships and in life. Once you know your own answer, and your spouse's, or the answer of anyone you love, you have something you didn't have before: a way to actually understand each other, instead of just reacting to each other.

That's why I put together a companion guide for this whole series. It walks through the assessment, and it gives you real conversation starters for once you know your results, so you have somewhere to actually take what you learn.

Hope Is a Choice

Hope isn't naive optimism. It's not pretending things are fine when they're not, and it's not assuming everything will just work out on its own. Hope is choosing to believe there's still good ahead, even when the picture in front of you isn't finished yet.

We've lived both sides of that choice. The version of us in that counselor's office had every reason to believe there was no version of this story worth continuing. And the version of us today, thirty-six years, two kids, five grandkids, and a whole lot of grace later, can tell you: it was worth every hard season it took to get here.

Wherever you are today, in your marriage, in a relationship you're rebuilding, or in a season where you're not sure what comes next, there's still a next chapter being written.

Don't put the pen down.

This Week's Invitation

Take the Primal Question assessment if you haven't already, and if you're married, invite your spouse to take it too. Then sit down together and share what you learned, not to fix each other, just to understand each other a little better than you did yesterday.

That one conversation might be the start of a new rhythm of its own.

Thank you for walking through this Rooted in Marriage series with us. We don't have it all figured out, and we never will. But we'll keep choosing hope, keep choosing grace, keep choosing truth, and keep choosing each other, one day at a time. We hope you will too.

Ready to Go Deeper?

A four-week series can start a conversation. It can't finish one.

If you've made it this far, maybe some of this is still sitting with you. Maybe you've been asking yourself things like:

I know something needs to shift in my marriage, but where do I even start?

Is it too late to rebuild what feels distant right now, or is there still time?

What if I finally understood what I actually need, and could say it out loud instead of just feeling it?

I don't want to just keep reading about this. I want something to actually be different.

Rooted & Rising 1-on-1 Christian Coaching

If any of those sound like you, that's exactly what Rooted & Rising was built for.

It's a six-session, one-on-one coaching experience designed to move you forward in the one area you need it most right now, whether that's your marriage, your identity, or the version of yourself you're becoming in this season. We'll start by identifying what's really driving you underneath the surface, and then we'll walk out a plan together, one session at a time, so you're not just understanding yourself better, you're actually moving.

You don't have to stay stuck in the same patterns, having the same unspoken tension, wondering if this is just how it is now. There's a next step, and you don't have to take it alone.

With you in it,

Tonya
