Rooted in Marriage: Our Story, and What's Ahead

Thirty-six years ago, a 19-year-old girl and a 21-year-old boy stood before family and friends and made promises neither of them fully understood yet. No money. No foundation of faith. Just young, in love, and convinced we knew exactly what we were doing.

Spoiler: We Didn't

Growth, personally and in relationship, doesn't happen overnight. It takes effort, intentionality, and a lot of deep breaths. We're flawed as individuals to begin with, and if faith is part of your relationship, there's an extra layer to contend with, because the enemy loves nothing more than driving a wedge into something God designed to be good and life-giving.

Over the next few weeks, I want to share more of our journey with you. What's helped, what's hurt, and what I wish someone had told us in that first shaky year. My hope is that no matter where you find yourself in your marriage today, you'll walk away with something to hold onto, because wherever you are, it can be even better.

Maybe you're in a season where things feel good, and you're looking to build on an already strong foundation. Maybe you're questioning your path and wondering what the next right step is. If you're "in love," I see you. If you're in the questioning, I see you too. I've been there. We said the words "for better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health," and we've lived every one of those. And yet, here we are.

A note if marriage isn't your current story: I know not everyone reading this is married. Some of you are single, divorced, remarried, or walking a different path entirely. This series is written with marriage front and center, but the heart of it- choosing to grow, extending grace, doing the hard, honest work of relationship- applies far beyond a wedding ring. I hope you'll find something here too.

What's Coming: Rooted in Marriage

This is the introduction to a four-part series I'm calling Rooted in Marriage. Over the next four weeks, we'll dig into what it actually takes to build something that lasts:

  • Week 1: Rooted in Grace: what it looks like to extend the grace to your spouse that you'd want extended to you, especially when it's hardest.
  • Week 2: Rooted in Truth: honest communication, and why the truth, spoken in love, is what real intimacy is built on.
  • Week 3: Rooted in Rhythm: the small, repeated habits that quietly keep a marriage connected, or quietly let it drift.
  • Week 4: Rooted in Hope: why hope isn't naive optimism, but a choice you make even when the picture isn't finished yet.

This week's invitation: Take a few minutes and start praying over your marriage, or over the relationships that matter most to you. Nothing formal, just an honest conversation with God about where you are and where you'd like to grow.

Next week, we start with grace. And if I'm honest, it's the one I've needed to learn the most.

Join me these next few weeks for Rooted in Marriage. And if it would bless you, invite your spouse, a friend, or a family member into the conversation too. We grow stronger together than we ever do alone.

With you in it,

Tonya
